Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 21 x 14, February 23, 1968. President Johnson appoints General Maxwell D. Taylor as "Chairman and Member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board." Signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by President Lyndon B. Johnson, and countersigned by Acting Secretary of State Nicholas Katzenbach. The embossed white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. Matted and framed to an overall size of 31 x 25. In fine condition.

Johnson appointed Taylor—formerly chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and ambassador to South Vietnam—to lead the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board in the immediate aftermath of the Tet Offensive, when serious questions had arisen over American intelligence assessments in Vietnam. The appointment placed one of the administration’s most experienced military and diplomatic advisers at the head of the independent body charged with evaluating the nation’s foreign intelligence programs.
