Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 14 x 17, June 24, 1848. President Polk appoints Jefferson Davis as "Second Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Artillery." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President James K. Polk, and countersigned by Secretary of War William L. Marcy. The crisply embossed white paper seal affixed at the upper left remains fully intact. In fine condition, with intersecting folds.

Jefferson Columbus Davis (1828–1879), not to be confused with the future Confederate president, earned this commission for gallantry at the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican-American War. He later became a prominent Union general, serving at Fort Sumter, Pea Ridge, Chickamauga, and during Sherman’s March to the Sea, before commanding the Department of Alaska and federal forces in the Modoc War.
