Description

French military officer (1851–1929) who served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Armies in the final months of World War I. Vintage matte-finish 6 x 8.5 photo of Ferdinand Foch in uniform, affixed to its original 8 x 10 mount, signed and inscribed on the mount in pencil, "Au Commander A. T. Carter, F. Foch, 20.12.20.” Also signed by the photographer, "Henri Manuel." In fine condition.

This handsome portrait captures Foch at the height of his postwar renown, less than two years after the former Allied supreme commander had helped secure victory and shape the peace settlement at Versailles. It was taken by Henri Manuel, the celebrated Parisian portraitist and official photographer of the French government, whose studio documented many of the era’s leading political, military, and cultural figures.
