Description

TLS from John Wayne, one page, 6 x 8.25, personal letterhead, December 6, 1974. Letter to Tony Watts of Thames Polytechnic, in full: “I am really sorry that I will not be able to make the Festival. I have no control over ‘Rooster Cogburn,’ but I shall turn your letter over to Mr. Wallis who is the producer and might on a whim be interested. Much luck to you in your venture.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a TLS from producer Hal B. Wallis, dated December 19, 1974, acknowledging that John Wayne had forwarded the recipient's request to screen Rooster Cogburn at an upcoming festival and explaining that the film would not be completed until late spring because it remained in editing, scoring, and dubbing.

Written while John Wayne was completing work on Rooster Cogburn, the sequel to Wayne's Academy Award-winning True Grit, this letter responds to an invitation from Thames Polytechnic to appear at a festival in England. Explaining that he had "no control over Rooster Cogburn," Wayne politely declines due to his filming commitments, but adds that he will forward the request to the film's producer, Hal B. Wallis, "who…might on a whim be interested." The correspondence offers a glimpse into the production of Wayne's final collaboration with Wallis, whose extraordinary career included classics such as Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and True Grit before concluding with Rooster Cogburn.
