Description

Peter Pan and Captain Hook's climactic duel atop the Jolly Roger—a striking concept painting by the legendary Mary Blair

(Walt Disney Studios, 1953) Tremendous original concept painting by Mary Blair for Peter Pan, which depicts Peter Pan and Captain Hook engaged in their climactic swordfight atop the main mast of the Jolly Roger. Accomplished in tempera on a 9 x 9 illustration board, the dramatic scene showcases the infamous pirate ship under a starlit sky, its boldly striped crimson-and-magenta sails dominating the composition as the two rivals duel high above the deck. A sweeping arc of Tinker Bell's pixie dust curves across the sails, while Blair's striking use of saturated color and simplified geometric forms transforms the Jolly Roger into one of the film's most unforgettable visual set pieces. In fine condition, with tack holes to corners.

Blair was a concept artist for Disney during the 1940s and early 1950s, working on designs for such films as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland. She also created designs for several Disney attractions (including It's a Small World) and, her largest work ever, the multi-story mosaic in Disney World's Contemporary Hotel concourse.
