Description

A magical meeting at Hangman's Tree—a charming multi-character concept painting by the legendary Mary Blair, featuring Peter Pan, Wendy Darling, and Tinker Bell

(Walt Disney Studios, 1953) Original concept painting by Mary Blair for Peter Pan, which depicts Peter Pan greeting Wendy Darling at Hangman's Tree in Never Land as Tinker Bell soars into the conversation. Accomplished in tempera on a 9 x 9 illustration board, the enchanting scene beautifully portrays Wendy emerging from the entrance to Peter Pan's secret hideout as the carefree hero welcomes her beneath a canopy of twisting vines and foliage. Blair's sweeping arc of golden pixie dust, representing the flight of Tinker Bell, lends movement and magic to the composition, while her modernist palette of deep greens, blues, and blacks creates an atmospheric, nighttime vision of Never Land. In fine condition, with tack holes to corners.

Blair was a concept artist for Disney during the 1940s and early 1950s, working on designs for such films as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland. She also created designs for several Disney attractions (including It's a Small World) and, her largest work ever, the multi-story mosaic in Disney World's Contemporary Hotel concourse.
