Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 13.25 x 17, March 20, 1850. President Taylor appoints John Beardsley as "Captain in the Eighth Regiment of Infantry, in the service of the United States." Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Zachary Taylor and countersigned by Secretary of War George W. Crawford. The orange seal affixed at the upper left remains intact. Archivally double-matted and framed to an overall size of 22 x 26.5. In fine condition, with light overall soiling.
This commission united two veterans of the Mexican-American War: President Zachary Taylor, whose battlefield victories had carried him to the White House, and John Beardsley, a West Point graduate who had fought at Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Veracruz, Cerro Gordo, and Churubusco before being severely wounded at Molino del Rey. Beardsley received a brevet promotion for gallantry in that battle, and this 1850 appointment advanced him to the permanent rank of captain; he later returned to service during the Civil War as colonel of the 9th New York Cavalry and commanded a cavalry brigade during the Second Battle of Bull Run. His Civil War career ended amid charges of disloyalty, cowardice, drunken misconduct, and unfitness for command, prompting his resignation in March 1863 before court-martial proceedings could move forward.
