Vintage ballpoint signature, "Janis Joplin," adding a sketch of a heart, on a white 3.25 x 4 panel from a Rothmans of Pall Mall Cigarette package. In very good condition, with irregularly trimmed edges and heavy overall creasing.
Accompanied by a provenance statement from the original recipient, in part: "In early July 1970, I personally acquired this autograph in Winnipeg, Manitoba. While walking through Memorial Park during the day, my then-boyfriend and I encountered Janis Joplin and members of her entourage. She stood out with her distinctive feathered hair and large colored glasses and of course, all of the excitement that was all around her.
My boyfriend, who was outgoing, approached her and asked for her autograph. She signed the Rothmans cigarette package he was carrying. After finishing the cigarettes, he gave the signed package to me. It has remained in my continuous possession ever since, stored safely for 56 years in an envelope through numerous moves and life events.
Later that same day, we attended the festival at Winnipeg Stadium where Janis Joplin performed. We were young back then and didn't appreciate all the musical line up but Janis was outstanding. Sadly, she died that fall, while I was in Grade 10."
