Scarce limited edition color 29 x 39 lithograph featuring artwork by acclaimed wildlife artist John A. Ruthven entitled 'Eagle to the Moon,' numbered 308/500, depicting a large bald eagle soaring with spread wings over a full moon and tree branch, signed and inscribed in black ink, “Thanks & best wishes always, To the Brandstetters, Neil Armstrong, ‘Eagle,’ Apollo 11.” The lower left is signed in pencil by the artist. Rolled and in very good condition, with wear to the trimmed edges, including a short tear and dings, some creases and light scratches, overall toning from prior display, and a notable area of surface cracking and image loss to the eagle's right wing, with evidence of apparent adhesive residue and possible inpainting.
The original work was commissioned by former Ohio Governor James Rhodes to commemorate the achievements of astronaut Neil Armstrong and is housed in the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Poster-style formats signed by Armstrong are tremendously rare—the only individual print edition that Armstrong officially signed was his famous ‘white space suit’ lithograph with space artist Paul Calle.
