Rare flown airmail cover, 6.5 x 3.5, signed in fountain pen, "Carried by air, Mexico D.F. New York, May 8, 1935, Amelia Earhart." Addressed in type to Earhart's husband, "Mr. G. P. Putnam, 50 West 45th St., New York City, U.S.A." The upper corners bear four stamps, a Mexico City postmark, and a receiving postmark from Newark, New Jersey, dated May 8, 1935. The reverse bears Mexican registry seals, transit markings, and a Newark, New Jersey, arrival postmark. In fine condition.
On May 8-9, 1935, Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly solo nonstop from Mexico City to Newark, New Jersey, completing the 2,100-mile journey in just over 14 hours despite difficult weather, high-altitude terrain, and strong headwinds. The feat marked yet another landmark achievement in her extraordinary flying career, coming just months after her solo nonstop flight from Honolulu to Oakland had made her the first person to accomplish that crossing. By successfully linking Mexico and the northeastern United States in a single nonstop flight, Earhart further demonstrated the growing potential of long-distance commercial aviation while reinforcing her status as the world's most celebrated female aviator.
