Vintage 1963 ballpoint signatures of the Beatles — “George Harrison, xx,” “Ringo Starr, xxx,” “John Lennon, xxx,” and “Paul McCartney, xxx” — on an off-white 4 x 5.25 notebook page. The consignor notes that the autographs were obtained outside the Royal Pier Hotel in Great Yarmouth, England, when the Beatles were in the town to perform at ABC Cinema on June 30th or July 28th, 1963. In fine condition, with horizontal folds, and slight show-through from an autograph on the reverse.
Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and a letter of provenance from the original recipient: ‘On holiday with my parents, brother and his best friend in 1963 we were lucky to have tickets for The Beatles concert. I can’t remember any music – just screaming! Amazing first concert ‘pop’ for the three of us. Staying in a small B&B we noticed a very posh Jaguar at big hotel nearby…Investigating, we saw all four Beatles having dinner in the front window which they kindly opened to sign autographs for us. Next morning we saw them leaving the hotel and they took time to chat and sign for us again. Such lovely memories and we’re still Beatles fans!”
The Beatles' only two appearances at the ABC Cinema in Great Yarmouth took place in 1963, on June 30th and July 28th, each consisting of two houses at 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. These appearances formed part of the British seaside 'summer season,' a longstanding entertainment tradition in which performers played one- or two-night engagements in popular holiday resorts. The Beatles had concluded their package tour with Roy Orbison on June 9th, shortly before the first of these two dates, by which point Please Please Me had already topped the UK charts and 'From Me to You' had become the band's first number-one single on the official UK Singles Chart.
Both appearances came just before the term 'Beatlemania' entered the popular press in October 1963, capturing the Beatles at the moment their extraordinary popularity was erupting into a national phenomenon. If the earlier date applies, the signatures were obtained on the eve of one of the Beatles' most consequential recording sessions. After completing their second performance at Great Yarmouth on June 30th, the group drove overnight to EMI Studios in London, where they recorded 'She Loves You' on July 1st, a song that became the best-selling UK single of the 1960s. If the later date applies instead, the signatures were obtained just two days before sessions for 'Please Mister Postman' and 'It Won't Be Long,' recorded for the Beatles' second album, With the Beatles, released that November.
