Description

Parlophone Records 45 RPM sleeve for the Beatles EP ‘Twist and Shout,’ signed nicely on the back cover in ballpoint, “George Harrison, xx.” The consignor notes that the signature was obtained at George Harrison’s home (174 Mackets Lane, Liverpool, England) in 1963. In fine condition, with ownership notations to the upper left. The record is not included.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and by a letter of provenance from the husband of the original recipient: “The signature was obtained by my late wife Janet as a young teenager in Liverpool. She and a friend worked out where each of the Beatles lived – they were still living at home at the time – and just went there and knocked on the door. At George's his mother opened the door and took the sleeve inside and George signed it. Janet has added her then address on the top left hand corner of the sleeve which is now just legible. The girls couldn't find Ringo's house and they weren't successful at either John or Paul's homes.”

Released in the United Kingdom on July 12, 1963, Twist and Shout was the Beatles' first EP and one of the format's earliest commercial landmarks. Featuring four songs from their debut album, Please Please Me — ‘Twist and Shout,’ ‘A Taste of Honey,’ ‘Do You Want to Know a Secret,’ and ‘There's a Place’ — the EP capitalized on Beatlemania at a pivotal moment in the band's rise to fame. It spent 21 weeks atop the British EP chart and ultimately sold more than 650,000 copies, making it the best-selling EP in UK chart history to that point.
