Remarkable autograph display celebrating Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic exploits, featuring a set of signatures from the shore party of the Nimrod Expedition of 1907–1909, plus a scarce signed photograph of the explorer himself. Includes:
- an outstanding set of 14 ink signatures from the shore party of the historic Nimrod Expedition of 1907–1909, otherwise known as the British Antarctic Expedition, which was the first of three expeditions to the Antarctic led by Ernest Shackleton. The signatures are on an off-white 8 x 10 sheet of illustrated letterhead emblazoned with the emblem for “The British Antarctic Expedition, 1907 / 1909.” Signers include: Ernest Shackleton (expedition leader), Jameson Boyd Adams (second in command/meteorologist), Eric Marshall (physician/cartographer/photographer), James Murray (biologist), Raymond Priestley (geologist), Philip Brocklehurst (assistant geologist), Bertram Armytage (pony handler), William Roberts (cook/assistant zoologist), George Marston (artist), Alistair Mackay (physician), Frank Wild (provisions), Ernest Joyce (general stores/zoological collections), Aeneas Mackintosh (second officer), and Bernard Day (electrician/mechanic).
- a remarkable vintage matte-finish 2.5 x 3.75 photo of Shackleton, bundled in a jacket that would serve to protect him from harsh polar conditions, signed in fountain pen, "Yours v. sincerely, Ernest Shackleton, 1912."
Handsomely cloth-matted and framed together with a descriptive plaque to an overall size of 24 x 18. In overall fine condition.
Led by Ernest Shackleton, the Nimrod Expedition achieved a new “Farthest South,” coming within 97 miles of the Pole, discovered the Beardmore Glacier as a route to the Antarctic interior, and completed the first ascent of Mount Erebus. Despite limited funding, the expedition also produced important geological, biological, and meteorological research and tested the first motorized transport used in Antarctica.
After Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911, Shackleton turned to the next great objective: crossing the continent from sea to sea via the pole. His 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition ended in disaster when the Endurance became trapped and crushed by ice, but his leadership in bringing every member of the party to safety cemented his reputation as one of the defining figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
