Hand-addressed stationery mailing envelope from the Ambos Mundos Hotel in Havana, Cuba, 6.5 x 3.75, addressed by Hemingway to Esquire founder Arnold Gingrich, "Arnold Gingrich Esq., 210 East Pearson Street, Chicago, Illinois, Estados Unidos," and signed in the return address area, "E. Hemingway." In fine condition, with a penciled date notation, "May 24, 1933."
Sent from Havana’s Hotel Ambos Mundos, where Hemingway maintained a room during the early 1930s, this envelope dates to the formative period of his relationship with Arnold Gingrich, founder of Esquire. Hemingway became one of the magazine’s most important early contributors, writing 'Marlin off the Morro: A Cuban Letter' for its inaugural October 1933 issue and beginning an association that helped bring his adventurous life in Cuba, Spain, and Africa to a broad American readership.
