In full: "You must know how much I appreciate your Birthday Gift of an exceptional effort in selling Ediphones during January. It is the keenest pleasure for me to see your name in a list of the most successful salesmen of our product, both for the sake of your own prosperity and for the spirit which prompted you in such a personal way to remember my anniversary. You are particularly to be congratulated on the unusual sale of twice the general sales average. With anticipation that your January business will continue to grow." The Ediphone represented Edison’s effort to fulfill his original vision of the phonograph as a practical business tool, recording spoken correspondence on reusable wax cylinders for later transcription by secretaries. Written as office dictation became increasingly mechanized, this letter offers a revealing glimpse into Edison’s personal involvement in promoting the product and motivating the national sales force that competed directly with the Dictaphone.
