Description

Rimsky-Korsakov quotes "Scheherazade"

Russian composer (1844–1908) best known for such works as Scheherezade, Sadko, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, and The Golden Cockerel. AMS signed "Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov," on an off-white 4.25 x 2.75 card, dated at St. Petersburg, December 20, 1907. Rimsky-Korsakov pens three measures from "Scheherazade," Op. 35—quoting from the second theme of the second movement of his celebrated symphonic suite—adding the title below. Mounted on a 6 x 10 mat board below a portrait of the composer. In very fine condition.

Composed in 1888, Scheherazade remains Rimsky-Korsakov’s best-known orchestral work and one of the great showpieces of Russian musical Orientalism. Inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, the suite evokes the legendary storyteller Scheherazade, who forestalls death at the hands of Sultan Shahryar by captivating him with a thousand and one tales. Rimsky-Korsakov transformed the story into a vividly colored orchestral fantasy, combining sensuous melody and brilliant instrumental writing.

The work later achieved renewed fame through Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, whose 1910 Paris production featured choreography by Michel Fokine, designs by Léon Bakst, and performances by Vaslav Nijinsky and Ida Rubinstein. A fine signed quotation from the composer’s most iconic score, penned in St. Petersburg less than six months before his death on June 21, 1908.
