English actor of stage and screen (1858–1933) who is best known as the old Baron Frankenstein in Frankenstein. DS, signed “Frederick Kerr, Lotos Club,” two pages, 8.5 x 11, January 16, 1930. Employment agreement signed by actor Frederick Kerr and sent to Samuel Goldwyn, Inc. for acceptance, engaging him to portray Lord Melrose in the mystery film Raffles. The agreement provides for Kerr's services through February 27, 1930, for a fee of $4,000, payable in two installments, and includes provisions governing his travel to Hollywood, wardrobe, and the studio's rights to use his name, likeness, and voice in connection with the production. Signed at the conclusion by Kerr, and countersigned by a secretary of Samuel Goldwyn, Inc. In fine condition.
Produced by Samuel Goldwyn and directed by George Fitzmaurice, Raffles (1930) starred Ronald Colman as the gentleman jewel thief A. J. Raffles and Kay Francis as Gwen Manders. Frederick Kerr appeared as Lord Melrose, one of the principal supporting roles in the early sound adaptation of E. W. Hornung's celebrated stories. Although best remembered today for portraying Dr. Waldman in Universal's landmark horror film Frankenstein (1931), Kerr was already an accomplished stage and screen actor when he signed this contract, making this an appealing studio document from the year before his most iconic performance.
