Description

RFK in 1964: "William Manchester is writing a book about the events of last November"

TLS signed “Love, Bobby,” one page, 7 x 9, The Attorney General letterhead, June 10, 1964. Letter to his cousin, Ann Gargan, caretaker of his father, Joseph P. Kennedy. In full: "As you know, William Manchester is writing a book about the events of last November which will be published in 1968 or 1969. He will be contacting you in the near future, and I would appreciate whatever cooperation you can give him. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

Accompanied by a group of RFK-related ephemera, including: an empty "The Attorney General" mailing envelope addressed to Gargan; a 1967 Christmas card from Robert F. Kennedy's family; a candid June 1968 snapshot of a flag at half mast honoring the death of RFK; a Western Union telegram inviting Gargan to the funeral mass held for RFK at St. Patrick's Cathedral on June 8th; an invitation and car placard for memorial services for RFK at Arlington National Cemetery; an RFK mass card; a TLS by Richard Cardinal Cushing; and an RFK eulogy booklet.

Ann Gargan was RFK’s first cousin, the daughter of Rose Kennedy’s younger sister, Agnes Fitzgerald Gargan. Orphaned at a young age, Ann and her siblings remained closely connected to the Kennedy family, spending considerable time with their cousins at Hyannis Port and other family homes. She later became a devoted caretaker to her uncle, Joseph P. Kennedy, remaining at the former ambassador’s side during the years of disability that followed his 1961 stroke.

From the estate of Ann Gargan King.
