New Mexico lawman (1850–1908) famed for killing his former gambling partner, the fabled outlaw Billy the Kid, in 1881. Geo. D. Bowman & Son, Bankers check (Las Cruces, New Mexico), 6.5 x 2.5, filled out and signed by Garrett, "P. F. Garrett," payable to John H. May for $75, December 18, 1900. Cloth-matted and framed to an overall size of 15 x 11; window to reverse reveals May's endorsement. In fine condition. A scarce and sought-after autograph in any form, this is the first Garrett check that we have ever offered.
This check dates to the closing months of Pat Garrett's tenure as sheriff of Doña Ana County, a position he assumed in 1896 to investigate the disappearance of Albert Jennings Fountain and his young son, one of the most enduring unsolved mysteries of the American West. Although Garrett's investigation led to the arrests of Oliver M. Lee, James Gililland, William McNew, and Bill Carr, all were acquitted in 1899, and the fate of the Fountains remains unknown. Written after Garrett had declined to seek reelection as sheriff and just one year before President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him collector of customs at El Paso, the check captures the legendary lawman during the brief transition between his career as a frontier peace officer and his final years in public service.
