Two original handwritten electoral ballots cast for Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 presidential election, each accomplished in ink on individual off-white sheets measuring 8 x 2.5 and 8 x 3.75 and signed by a New Jersey presidential elector. One, signed by Edward W. Ivins at the State House in Trenton on December 5, 1860, reads: “I vote for Abraham Lincoln of Illinois, for President of the United States of America.” The second, signed by George H. Brown and dated the same day at Trenton, likewise records his vote for “Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America.” Includes a later handwritten attestation by F. F. Patterson, identifying the pieces as electoral ballots cast at the New Jersey Electoral College meeting in Trenton on December 5, 1860, noting that he witnessed the proceedings as a newspaper reporter and received the ballots from the electors afterward. In overall very good to fine condition, with substantial paper loss to one of the ballots.
The consignor notes that the ballots were acquired from New Jersey Superior Court Judge R. Cooper Brown in 1969. According to the consignor, Judge Brown, a member of the prominent Cooper family of Camden and a longtime board member of the Camden County Historical Society, presented the ballots after the consignor showed him a Lincoln-signed note, believing they may have originated from the Historical Society's holdings.
