ALS as an Ohio congressman, signed “Wm. McKinley, Jr.,” one page, 7.5 x 9.75, House of Representatives letterhead, June 13, 1878. Handwritten letter to Captain Wells: “This letter will be presented to you by Mr. Thomas G. Prince of my home, and whom I have recently appointed a Cadet to the Naval Academy. You will remember I talked to you about him. The Secy of the Navy addresses a letter to the Com’r in charge of the Academy concerning him. I will be much pleased personally, if you will present him to the Com & commend him to favorable notice & consideration on my assurance. He is a very worthy young man & I am personally greatly interested in his success. Please show him all the consideration you can oblige.” In fine condition. Written during William McKinley's first term in Congress, this letter concerns one of the most important patronage privileges available to members of the House: the appointment of cadets to the United States Naval Academy. McKinley warmly recommends Thomas G. Prince, whom he had recently selected for admission, asking Captain Wells to present him to academy officials and extend him every possible consideration.
