Collection of 10 Washington Loan and Trust Company (West End Office) checks, each 6.75 x 2.75, dated between 1929 and 1933, all filled out and signed by J. Edgar Hoover, “John Edgar Hoover.” Over the five-year span, Hoover pays a variety of people and places, such as the “University Club,” “Joseph S. Repetti,” “The Roosevelt,” and “Hotel Traymore.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Scott R. Mohr, grandson of longtime FBI official John P. Mohr, stating that the material descended directly from his grandfather’s personal holdings and remained in the family until its present offering.
John P. Mohr (1910–1997) was one of J. Edgar Hoover's closest and most trusted aides during the final decades of his tenure as FBI director. After joining the Bureau in 1933, Mohr rose steadily through the ranks, ultimately retiring in 1972 as the FBI's fourth-ranking official. A favorite of both Hoover and Associate Director Clyde Tolson, he played a key role in the Bureau's administration and was entrusted with numerous sensitive responsibilities. Following Hoover's death in May 1972, Mohr was selected to notify Acting Attorney General Richard Kleindienst and was charged with sealing Hoover's personal office, reflecting the extraordinary confidence Hoover and his inner circle placed in him.
