Description

Prominently signed first British edition of The Art of Walt Disney, the first major scholarly study of Disney's artistic achievements

Signed book: The Art of Walt Disney by Robert D. Feild. First British edition. London/Glasgow: Collins, 1944. Hardcover with oatmeal cloth and red-and-black titling, 8.25 x 11.25, 290 pages. Signed and inscribed on the title page in blue ink, “To Eileen, All best wishes, Walt Disney.” Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG/None, with minor foxing to textblock and toning to endpapers.

Published in 1942 and issued two years later in its first British edition, The Art of Walt Disney is regarded as the first major scholarly study of Disney's artistic achievements and the earliest comprehensive examination of the studio's animation process. Harvard art historian Robert D. Feild was granted unprecedented access to the Walt Disney Studios during 1939-1940, observing the production of such landmark films as Pinocchio and Fantasia while documenting the techniques, philosophy, and collaborative artistry that transformed animation into a respected art form. Richly illustrated and produced with Disney's cooperation, the volume remains one of the most influential early books on the studio and an enduring cornerstone of Disney scholarship. Signed examples are especially desirable.
