Important French painter (1882–1963) who, along with Picasso, was one of the seminal figures in the development of Cubism. Five items relating to the cover design and publication of the 1959 Georges Braque monograph G. Braque, written by John Russell and published by Phaidon Press, consisting of: a handwritten note in French signed “G.B.,” in which Braque offers to sell the original gouache created for the cover of the book, with John Russell's handwritten instruction on the verso, “Please return without fail to me as soon as possible”; a Barclays Bank payment voucher marked “PAID,” dated January 12, 1960, recording payment of £150 for “One gouache (cover-design for ‘Braque,’ by John Russell)”; a Marlborough Fine Art purchase voucher documenting the sale of the gouache, identified as Colombe sur fond bleu et pourpre (1959), “Design for cover of ‘Braque’ by John Russell, Phaidon, 1959”; a first edition of John Russell's G. Braque (London: Phaidon Press, 1959), retaining its original pictorial dust jacket and inscribed “To Dora Maar”; and an additional original dust jacket for the same edition.
