Original hand-inked eight-panel Popeye comic strip attributed to Bud Sagendorf, 13.75 x 20.5, identified in the right margin as “Popeye #3 P. 35,” additional numbering to upper and lower margins, “44590” and “BK #7 P.” The comic, dated circa 1948, centers on Wimpy's bewilderment after Popeye unexpectedly “smacked” him without warning. Concerned by Popeye's strange behavior, Wimpy sets out to warn Olive Oyl, who attests: “But that’s silly, Wimpy…Popeye doesn’t go around hitting his friends!” When she asks why he's leaving to attend “a vital matter,” he quips that he has to "find a doctor" for her, implying that she’s likely to be Popeye's next victim. Bud Sagendorf (1915–1994), a longtime assistant to Popeye creator E. C. Segar, became the principal creative force behind the character following Segar's death. From 1948 to 1967, he wrote and illustrated the Popeye comic book for Dell, Gold Key, and King Comics, and in 1959 assumed stewardship of the long-running Thimble Theatre newspaper strip, ensuring Popeye's continued popularity for a new generation of readers.
