Rare vellum manuscript DS, one page, 28.5 x 16, March 1686. Colonial land patent issued under the authority of New York Governor Thomas Dongan, conveying a tract of land in present-day Westchester County to John Knight following its purchase from five Native American sachems identified as the "natives and principal owners" of the property: Emigent, Askewans, Penarand, Tagehkint, and one additional chief. The document describes the boundaries of the tract, beginning at Kichtawong Creek and extending along the Hudson River to lands owned by Stephanus Van Cortlandt, one of colonial New York's most prominent landowners. The document is signed prominently along the bottom folded margin by Thomas Dongan as the fifth Colonial Governor of New York. Retains its original pendant seal. A docket on the verso records the patent's approval at a court held in New York on March 24, 1686, attended by Governor Dongan, Anthony Brockholls, Frederick Philipse, Stephanus Van Cortlandt, and Nathaniel Bayard. In fine condition.
Issued in March 1686 during Thomas Dongan's administration as governor of New York, the patent documents a period when the colony was establishing the legal framework for land ownership and settlement. Following the purchase of property in the Kichtawong region of present-day northern Westchester County from five Native American sachems, the transaction was formally confirmed under English colonial law by a court comprising Governor Dongan, Anthony Brockholls, Frederick Philipse, Stephanus Van Cortlandt, and Nathaniel Bayard, among the most influential political leaders and landowners in seventeenth-century New York. As an official colonial land grant bearing Dongan's signature and original seal, the document represents an important surviving record of early land administration in colonial New York.
