Description

Picasso boldly signs the catalog for his breakthrough 1960 Galerie Louise Leiris linocut exhibition

Softcover French-language catalog for an exhibition entitled "Picasso: 45 Gravures sur Linoleum, 1958–1960," held at Galerie Louise Leiris from June 15–July 13, 1960, 6.5 x 6.5, beautifully signed on the title page in thick blue crayon, "Picasso, le 3.4.62." The features 45 full-page reproductions of the prints exhibited, in both black-and-white and color. In fine condition.

Picasso’s linocuts of the late 1950s and early 1960s represent one of the great late bursts of invention in his printmaking career. Working from Vallauris with master printer Hidalgo Arnéra, Picasso radically expanded the possibilities of the medium, developing bold color compositions through a demanding reduction technique in which successive layers were cut from a single block. The Galerie Louise Leiris exhibition helped introduce this vibrant body of work at the moment of its creation, capturing Picasso’s restless experimentation well into his later years.
