World War II-dated TLS, one page, 5.5 x 7, Chikaming Goat Farm letterhead, March 6, 1943. Letter to Mr. Ware: “Months ago I should have written to thank [you] for so keen, kindly and thoughtful a letter as you sent me. You know what my intentions and design were in writing The War Years. There were moments when I said to myself, ‘This is a case where everybody is wrong and nobody is to blame.’ May health be yours and luck stars be over you.” In very good to fine condition, with paper loss to the top edge, and light wrinkling from the attached clipping. Accompanied by an original glossy 4 x 4 deckle-edged photo of Sandburg reading on a park bench, the reverse of which bears a Stanley Kimmel stamp.
In this letter, Sandburg reflects on the writing of his four-volume Civil War biography Abraham Lincoln: The War Years, published in 1939 and awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History the following year. Looking back on the project, he remarks that there were moments when he felt it was "a case where everybody is wrong and nobody is to blame," a revealing observation on the challenges of interpreting the personalities, politics, and sectional conflicts that shaped the Civil War. The comment offers a rare glimpse into Sandburg's own thinking about the work that occupied more than a decade of research and writing.
