ALS signed “R. W. Emerson,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, December 11, [1858]. Handwritten letter from Concord, in part: "I ought before this, to have replied more to the courteous invitation you sent me from your friend, who offered me hospitality on the night of the 15th. Will you say to him with my entire thanks for his goodness,—& with a regret, too, that makes me hesitate,—that…the circumstance that my brother has just removed into the city of N.Y. makes it in a manner imperative on me to spend Wednesday night with him in Lafayette Place." In very good to fine condition, with a strip of toning, and some minor paper loss, along the right edge. Accompanied by a six-volume set of Emerson's works published by Ticknor and Fields in 1860, including: Essays: First Series, Essays: Second Series, Poems, Representative Men, English Traits, and Miscellanies, in overall fair to good condition.
