Vintage matte-finish 7 x 9.25 photo of Richard Byrd in a handsome suit and tie, affixed to its original 9.25 x 11.5 New York Times Studios mount, boldly signed in fountain pen, "May 18, 1927, With sincere good wishes, R. E. Byrd." In fine condition, with a tiny tear to the right edge of the mount.
Signed on May 18, 1927, this photograph dates to one of the most consequential weeks in the race for the Orteig Prize. Just a month earlier, Byrd's Fokker trimotor America had crashed during a practice takeoff at Roosevelt Field, injuring pilot Floyd Bennett and delaying the expedition's planned transatlantic attempt while repairs were completed. During this same period, Byrd and his team shared weather and navigational information with fellow competitor Charles Lindbergh, who departed Roosevelt Field on May 20th and completed the first solo nonstop flight from New York to Paris the following day. Byrd ultimately crossed the Atlantic in the America in late June 1927, reaching France more than a month after Lindbergh's historic achievement.
