Description

Revolutionary War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 6 x 5.5, June 13, 1783. As Governor of Virginia, Benjamin Harrison, “on the recommendation from the Worshipful Court of the county of Princess Anne, appoints James Himms Captain of the Militia of the said county.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by Harrison. The original off-white paper seal remains affixed below. In very good condition, with splitting to the fragile intersecting folds, and ink erosion and related paper loss to the last name of the signature. Dated June 13, 1783, just months before the Treaty of Paris formally concluded the Revolutionary War, this militia commission reflects Virginia's continuing military administration during the final stages of the struggle for American independence.

From the collection of Mark S. Robbins.
