Description

Revolutionary War-dated ADS signed “GC,” one page, both sides, 4.5 x 8.25, December 4, 1782. Handwritten document headed, “Proposals made to Mr. L.M. and to Mr. H., parties interested with my help in the estate of my late father-in-law, Mr. R.M.,” setting forth three numbered proposals concerning the administration and settlement of the estate of his late father-in-law, Rees Meredith. In the first section, Clymer proposes that he “will remove to Philadelphia within five months from this date” and, acting under proper authority, “undertake the general management of the affairs of that estate,” particularly endeavoring “to collect, or otherwise to realize by allowed transferable securities, the outstanding debts due to the said estate.” The second proposal concerns the acceptance and receipt of debts, compensation for his efforts, and the handling of accounts, while the third addresses the formation of an agreement governing the arrangement for a term of years. Signed at the conclusion by George Clymer with his initials. In fine condition. Rees Meredith was a prominent Philadelphia merchant and civic leader whose family occupied an important place in the commercial life of colonial Pennsylvania. His daughter Elizabeth Meredith married George Clymer, linking two influential Philadelphia families at a time when the city stood at the center of the emerging American republic.

From the collection of Mark S. Robbins.
