Apple’s original iPhone launch in 2007 was closely tied to an exclusive partnership with Cingular Wireless, which soon became AT&T. The deal gave Apple unusual control over the phone’s design, software, branding, and user experience, while Cingular gained a headline-grabbing device that helped drive customers to its network. This partnership was a major shift in the mobile industry because carriers had traditionally dictated many phone features, but the iPhone put Apple—and the smartphone experience—at the center.
The consignor reports: "My father-in-law was John Stupka. He was the president of Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems for many years. During that time, Stan Sigman was the vice-president under him. Southwestern Bell promoted my father-in-law and moved him to their corporate office in San Antonio. Mr. Sigman became the president of SBMS, which then became Cingular Wireless. Mr. Sigman and my father-in-law were good friends, and kept in close contact over the years. When Mr. Sigman signed the iPhone exclusive deal with Mr. Jobs, he sent this to my father-in-law as a gift to thank him for all he’d done for him over the years. My father-in-law knew I was a fan of Mr. Jobs, so he gave this to me when he retired."
