Vintage ballpoint signature, “Elvis Presley,” on the 16.75 x 3 masthead portion of the New York Herald Tribune, European Edition, dated June 16, 1959. Matted and framed under Artglass to an overall size of 24 x 10.5. Frame backing bears a typed German-language provenance statement from the original recipient recounting her chance meeting with Presley on the Champs-Élysées in Paris while she was a student at the Sorbonne selling copies of the newspaper. According to her account, Presley purchased a paper and spoke with her after learning that she was German, explaining that he was stationed in Bad Nauheim with the U.S. Army and visiting Paris on short leave. When she asked for an autograph, Presley signed the newspaper masthead in the absence of any other paper. She further recalled that he then handed her a small collection of French coins, remarking, “Maybe this will help you a bit,” a gesture she remembered as an act of unexpected kindness. In fine condition, with several vertical folds, one of which passes through the signature.
Signed during Elvis Presley's military service in West Germany, this newspaper masthead dates to June 16, 1959, when Presley, drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1958 at the height of his fame, was stationed near Bad Nauheim and visiting Paris on leave. Presley served until his honorable discharge in March 1960, spending much of his posting living off-base in Bad Nauheim while assigned to Friedberg.
