Description

Doyle clarifies a contract for his play The Speckled Band—a stage adaptation of one of his classic Sherlock Holmes stories

ALS signed “A. Conan Doyle,” one page, 4.25 x 6.75, Windlesham letterhead, July 14, 1913. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, in full: "Let me thank you once more for your kindness. This quite disposes of the whole question, and leaves, as I understood the matter, both the Gillette play and my 'Speckled Band' outside the contract. It is very helpful of you to clear the matter up, and I am very sorry I broke in on your holiday. If you ever feel like trying these links I can give you a game and also put you up for the night." Matted and framed to an overall size of 10 x 13. In very fine condition, with a couple of chips to the bottom of the frame.

Doyle’s mention of The Speckled Band is especially desirable, as the chilling Sherlock Holmes tale—first published in 1892 and later adapted by Doyle for the stage—has long been regarded as one of the author’s finest and most memorable detective stories. Centered on the sinister Dr. Grimesby Roylott and one of Holmes’s most dramatic deductions, the story remains a cornerstone of the Sherlock Holmes canon, making this letter a compelling association piece linking Doyle directly to one of his most celebrated works.
