Description

ANS signed “T. A. Edison,” penned on the reverse of a 5 x 2.75 government postal card, July 23 [no year]. Addressed from Menlo Park, New Jersey, a handwritten note to "R. Ritchie" of Philosophical Instruments in Boston, Massachusetts: "Please send catalogue." Addressed on the reverse in Edison's hand. Archivally matted and framed to an overall size of 10 x 8; window to frame backing reveals reverse of postal card. In fine condition.

Addressed to R. Ritchie of E. S. Ritchie & Sons, the prominent Boston manufacturer and dealer in philosophical and scientific instruments, this note requests a copy of the firm's catalogue. Founded by Edward Samuel Ritchie (1814–1895), one of the most accomplished instrument makers in nineteenth-century America, the company supplied compasses, electrical apparatus, and scientific equipment to universities, laboratories, the U.S. Navy, and private researchers. Sent from Edison's Menlo Park laboratory, the request reflects his ongoing need for specialized instruments and technical equipment during one of the most productive periods of his experimental career.
