Original vintage pearl-finish 9.75 x 7.75 photo of Thomas Edison congratulating autogyro pilot Captain James Ray following a demonstration flight of a Pitcairn-Cierva Autogyro at Newark Airport, circa 1930. The verso bears a contemporary typed caption identifying the image as "Mr. Edison's First Visit at the Newark Airport,” and as an “Exclusive Photo by Drew B Peters Studios,” whose credit stamp is present below the affixed caption. In very good condition, with overall creasing, and loss to the lower corners.
Taken in September 1930, approximately thirteen months before Edison's death, this photograph captures the inventor at Newark Airport as he congratulates Captain James Ray following a demonstration of the innovative Pitcairn-Cierva Autogyro. Contemporary press accounts reported that Edison was greatly impressed by the aircraft during his first recorded visit to the airport, an event significant enough to generate national newspaper coverage.
