Description

Rare athlete's badge issued for the Athens 1906 Intercalated Olympics. Gilt bronze, 12 gm, 36 mm in diameter, featuring an enameled light blue ancient Greek motif in the border, with a white enamel circular center surrounding the gilt “A.” Mounted with a golden safety pin on the reverse. The 1906 Games were regarded as Olympic Games by contemporaries, including both participants and the international press, and attracted 894 athletes from 20 countries. As the Games were later excluded from the IOC's official Olympic chronology, they are generally known today as the 'Intercalated' Olympics. These badges were handmade by the Hellenic army for the needs of the Olympic Games.

Held in Athens from April 22 to May 2, 1906, the Intercalated Games were organized to stabilize the fledgling Olympic movement following the widely criticized Paris 1900 and St. Louis 1904 Olympiads. The event proved a major success, attracting 894 athletes from 20 nations and introducing several ceremonial and organizational features that would become standard at later Olympic Games, most notably the parade of national teams during the opening ceremonies. Although the International Olympic Committee later declined to include the 1906 Games within the official Olympic chronology, contemporaries regarded them as a fully Olympic competition. Athlete badges from the Athens Games are scarce survivals from this formative period of Olympic history and rank among the earliest pieces of official Olympic participant insignia.
