Description

American Olympic Committee official's badge issued for the Athens 1906 Intercalated Olympics. Gilt bronze, 27 x 35 mm, 11 gm, by Dieges & Clust. The badge features a raised-relief eagle flanked by American and Greek shields beneath raised text reading: “Olympic Games 1906,” with the emblem of the Amateur Athletic Union (A.A.U.) present below. The reverse bears an engraved presentation inscription, in full: “Compliments of Jas. E. Sullivan, Sec’y ‘American Olympic Committee,’” and is maker-marked “Dieges & Clust, N.Y.” Lacking its original ribbon and crossbar, and retaining only its suspension ring.

James Edward Sullivan (1862–1914) was among the most influential figures in the development of amateur athletics in the United States, serving as a founder of the Amateur Athletic Union and as secretary of the American Olympic Committee. Produced for the American delegation to the 1906 Athens Intercalated Games, this scarce official's badge survives from an Olympiad regarded by contemporaries as a fully Olympic competition and later excluded from the IOC's official chronology. An uncommon and historically significant relic of early American Olympic participation, presented by one of the leading figures of the early Olympic movement.
