Description

Sydney 2000 silver medal in Greco-Roman wrestling

Winner's medal awarded to Cuban wrestler Lázaro Rivas at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. Silver, 68 mm, 185 gm, by Wojciech Pietranik and Brian Thompson; manufactured by the Royal Australian Mint. The front depicts a 'Seated Victory' with the Colosseum in the background; the reverse portrays the Olympic rings over the iconic Sydney Opera House, with the Sydney Olympic torch at right, inscribed above and below, "Wrestling, Greco-Roman, 54 KG." The front and reverse bear uneven toning that is typical of Sydney silver winner's medals. Complete with the original blue ribbon embroidered in silver with the legend, "Sydney 2000."

At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Greco-Roman wrestling was contested at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of a 16-event Olympic wrestling program. In the men’s 54 kg Greco-Roman class, Cuba’s Lázaro Rivas earned the silver medal, finishing behind South Korea’s defending champion Sim Kwon-Ho, while Kang Yong-Gyun of North Korea took bronze. Rivas’s podium finish was a proud moment for Cuban wrestling and part of Cuba’s strong showing in the sport at Sydney 2000.
