Winner’s medal awarded to Cuban taekwondo practitioner Yanelis Labrada at the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics. Silver, 60 mm, 138 gm, by Elena Votsi and Kostas Kazakos; manufactured by Efsimon. The front depicts the winged goddess of Victory soaring into the Panathinaikos Stadium, with Greek characters and Olympic rings above; the reverse features the Eternal Flame of Olympia, the opening lines of Pindar's Eighth Olympic Ode, and the 2004 Summer Games logo, with the sport engraved in Greek lettering along the bottom, “Ταεκβοντό - Κατηγορία έως 49 κιλών Γυναικών [Taekwondo - Women's Under-49 kg Category].” Completed by the original multicolored ribbon and wooden presentation box with its metal slipcase. The 2004 Athens winner’s medals replaced the long-held ‘seated Victory’ design by Giuseppe Cassioli, rectifying the mistake of using a depiction of the Roman Colosseum rather than a Greek venue.
The women's flyweight taekwondo competition at the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics was held on August 26th at the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex and featured athletes in the under-49 kilogram division. Representing Cuba, Yanelis Labrada advanced through a strong field to reach the Olympic final, defeating bronze medalist Yaowapa Boorapolchai of Thailand in the quarterfinals and Euda Carías of Guatemala in the semifinals. Labrada ultimately claimed the silver medal after falling to Chen Shih-hsin of Chinese Taipei in the championship bout by a score of 5-4, earning Cuba its second consecutive Olympic silver medal in women’s flyweight taekwondo.
