Rare pencil signature, "Geronimo," on an off-white 4 x 2.25 card. In fine condition, with light soiling, and old tape along the edges which could easily be matted out. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA, assigning the autograph a grade of "9." According to the consignor, the signature originates from the collection of their great-aunt, a past president of the Long Island chapter of the New York State Archaeological Association and founder and former president of the Southold Indian Museum in Southold, Long Island, New York.
Geronimo (1829–1909), the celebrated Chiricahua Apache leader, became one of the most recognizable Native American figures of the late nineteenth century through his prolonged resistance to United States and Mexican military forces. Following his final surrender to General Nelson Miles in 1886, he was held as a prisoner of war and eventually settled at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he remained under military custody until his death in 1909.
During his years at Fort Sill, Geronimo appeared at several major public exhibitions, including the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition, the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, and the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, where he sold signed photographs, bows and arrows, and other personal items to visitors. He later participated in Theodore Roosevelt's 1905 inaugural parade and appeared with several Wild West exhibitions, public appearances that helped make his autograph and personal relics highly sought after by the American public.
