LS signed “C. A. Arthur,” one page, 5 x 8, June 26, 1880. Letter to James H. Loomis, in full: “Pray pardon my delay in acknowledging receipt of your letter of the 12th inst. I beg to thank you for your kind congratulations.” In fine condition.
Written only weeks after the Republican National Convention nominated James A. Garfield for president and Chester A. Arthur for vice president in June 1880, this letter dates from a transformative moment in Arthur’s public career. A prominent leader of the Republican Party’s Stalwart faction in New York, Arthur had just emerged onto the national stage as the party’s vice-presidential nominee. In this brief note, he thanks the recipient for his “kind congratulations,” likely offered in response to his recent nomination. Garfield and Arthur would be elected in November 1880, and Arthur would become president following Garfield’s assassination in September 1881.
