Description

LS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 5 x 8, June 26, 1880. Addressed from Mentor, Ohio, a letter to author Charles Dudley Warner, penned in the hand of his campaign secretary, J. Stanley-Brown: "Accept my thanks for your kind letter of the 23rd inst. and for Hawley's generous hand grasp before he sailed." In fine condition.

Written just eighteen days after James A. Garfield secured the Republican presidential nomination at the party's national convention in Chicago, this letter reflects the wave of congratulations that followed his emergence as the party's standard-bearer. Garfield had entered the convention as neither a declared candidate nor a front-runner, but ultimately emerged as the compromise choice after a prolonged deadlock among the leading contenders. His correspondent, Charles Dudley Warner, was one of the nation's most prominent authors and editors, best known as Mark Twain's collaborator on The Gilded Age and as a leading voice among reform-minded Republicans. Garfield thanks Warner for his "kind letter" and for the "generous hand grasp" of a man identified only as "Hawley," likely the Connecticut Republican leader, Civil War general, and future U.S. senator Joseph R. Hawley. Written from Garfield's home in Mentor during the opening days of his presidential campaign, the letter captures a moment when prominent supporters were rallying around the newly nominated candidate.
