Civil War–dated partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.75 x 19.5, October 5, 1861. President Lincoln appoints Lorenzo Lorain as "First Lieutenant in the Fifth Regiment of Artillery." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Abraham Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of War Simon Cameron. The blue seal affixed at the upper left remains mostly intact. In fine condition, with a faint tape stain along the top edge.
A Pennsylvania native and 1856 West Point graduate, Lorenzo Lorain (1831–1882) served at Fort Walla Walla and Fort Umpqua before being recalled east at the outbreak of the Civil War. During his Oregon posting, Lorain became one of the earliest photographers active in the region, producing rare images of Fort Umpqua, Camp Day, Portland, Oregon City, and Native peoples of the Coast Reservation and Klamath region. Wounded at Blackburn’s Ford in July 1861, Lorain later held teaching posts at West Point, Lehigh University, and the U.S. Artillery School at Fort Monroe, where he helped develop the engineering and artillery program.
