Partly-printed vellum DS, signed “Franklin Pierce" as president and "Jeffer. Davis" as secretary of war, one page, 15.75 x 19, January 24, 1857. President Pierce appoints Martin Burke as a "Major in the Second Regiment of Artillery." Signed at the conclusion by President Franklin Pierce, and countersigned by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. The white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. In fine condition, with all handwriting light but legible.
Martin Burke (1800–1882) was a career U.S. Army officer who commanded Fort Lafayette in New York City Harbor during the Civil War. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865, for 'faithful services to his country.'
