Description

"When this is read, burn it"—Polk weighs in on the Democrats' slim Senate margin in 1839

ALS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, October 27, 1839. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, marked "Private & Confidential," in part: "The instructing resolutions to our Senators have been introduced into the Senate by Mr. Coe. The political sentiment here is greater than at the assuming of the session. Our friends thus far have stood firmly together, and it is very important that they should continue to do so. Heaven and earth will be moved to defeat the instructing resolutions, and some of our friends think, (and from what I hear such is my opinion) that your presence here as early as you can be here, may be very important. I hope it will be convenient for you, to pay us another visit…If you find you cannot come on receipt of this, you must not fail to write immediately, to your Senator concerning the instructing resolutions. A change of two puts us in a minority in the Senate and there are two, who have given indications that they are halting. I must not be more specific; you will understand when the difficulty arises. We are all surprized at it. They are both good men of true, but do not seem to have considered the importance of the matter, or the consequences of their course. When this is read, burn it." Addressed on the integral leaf in Polk's own hand. In fine condition.
