Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 14.5 x 9.5, May 22, 1829. President Jackson grants John Davis of Butler County, Ohio, a parcel of land "at Crawfordsville, Indiana, containing Eighty Acres." Prominently signed at the conclusion by Andrew Jackson, and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Elijah Hayward. The white paper seal remains affixed to the lower left corner. Double-matted and framed to an overall size of 21.5 x 16. In fine condition.

Issued less than three months after Andrew Jackson assumed the presidency, this land patent reflects one of the federal government's principal responsibilities in the early nineteenth century: the administration and distribution of public lands. Conveying eighty acres in Indiana, the document dates to a period of rapid settlement and development in the Old Northwest, as federal land sales helped transform frontier territory into farms, towns, and communities.
