Description

Early signed letter by the future Intendant of New France, written on the eve of France’s royal reorganization of Canada

LS in French, signed “Talon,” four pages on two conjoined leaves, 7.75 x 12.25 folded, dated at “A Monce [Mons],” August 10, 1662, addressed to Guillaume Billion, Seigneur de la Prugne. In this substantive early letter, Talon discusses religious matters and expresses support for Théodore-Germain Allart of the Récollet order, later associated with efforts to restore the Récollet mission in New France. Handsomely penned in dark ink, with Talon’s signature appearing prominently at the conclusion. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, scattered toning and edge wear, and a small burn hole to both leaves affecting a few words of text.

Jean Talon is widely regarded as the first effective Intendant of New France, arriving in Quebec in 1665 at a moment when the struggling colony faced military pressure from the Iroquois, economic instability, administrative corruption, and severe population decline. Written in 1662 while Talon was serving as Intendant of Hainaut in the Spanish Netherlands, the letter dates to the eve of a transformative moment in Canadian colonial history: in 1663, Louis XIV dissolved the failing Company of New France and reorganized the colony as a royal province directly under the French crown, a restructuring that led to Talon’s appointment in New France under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Colbert.

Talon subsequently undertook sweeping reforms that reshaped the colony’s future, promoting immigration and settlement, encouraging trade and local industry, reorganizing the colonial justice system, supporting military operations against the Iroquois, and helping establish the famed “filles du roi” program intended to increase the colony’s population. The letter’s discussion of Théodore-Germain Allart and the Récollet order also reflects the religious politics surrounding New France during this period, as Talon would later support the return of the Récollets to Canada after decades of Jesuit dominance following the English seizure of Quebec in 1629. Letters written before Talon’s departure for New France are especially desirable, illuminating the political, religious, and administrative networks that shaped the French colony immediately before its transition to direct royal rule.
