Distinguished and influential British architect (1632–1723) who played a leading role in the rebuilding of London following the devastating Great Fire of 1666, and whose St. Paul's Cathedral takes a place among the greatest designs in the history of architecture. Manuscript DS, signed “Ch. Wren,” one page, 7 x 10, March 4, 1679/1680. Document headed, “A bill for ye Privvey Garden beginning ye 29 of September: 1679: and Ending ye 23 of December of 79,” recording expenses connected to work on the Privy Garden, possibly at Hampton Court, listing wages and materials for a 13-week period, including payments to workers “Will: Waite,” “Stonen Fagg,” “John Elanson,” “Tho Hawthornwhite,” and “Robert Lewitt,” as well as costs for granite, dung, turfes, young setts and trees, laborers, cleansing the gallery, shells, nails, brooms, sharpening scythes, caskets, repairing wheelbarrows, cold frames, and “a mopp,” amounting to a total of £94.11.0. Signed at the conclusion in ink by Christopher Wren, likely in his capacity as the King's Surveyor of Works. Nicely double-matted with an engraved portrait to an overall size of 19 x 17. In fine condition.
